Bali Currency
What to Know Before You Go
Planning a Bali escape? Let’s talk money, because knowing how to handle your Bali currency makes travel smoother, cheaper and way less stressful. Here’s everything you need to know about what currency is used in Bali, credit card use, ATMs, and tipping etiquette.
What currency is used in Bali?
The official currency in Bali is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). You’ll often see it written as Rp, and yes, it comes in some seriously high numbers – But don’t worry, Rp100,000 is only around 10 Australian dollars.
Should you exchange before you arrive?
It’s a good idea to bring a small amount of Rupiah with you for initial expenses like taxis, tips or snacks. However, you’ll usually get better exchange rates in Bali than in Australia. Look for licensed money changers – they’ll display their rates clearly and won’t sneak in hidden fees.
Are credit cards widely accepted in Bali?
Credit and debit cards are accepted at most hotels, large restaurants and retail stores, especially in tourist hubs like Seminyak, Ubud, and Nusa Dua. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted, but smaller vendors, market stalls and local warungs (eateries) still prefer cash, so always keep some handy.
Are there safe and reliable ATMs in Bali?
Yes! ATMs are common and generally reliable, especially near airports, major towns and resort areas. For the safest experience:
- Use machines attached to banks or inside convenience stores
- Avoid ATMs in isolated areas or on the street
- Always cover the keypad and watch for any suspicious attachments
Pro tip: Notify your bank before travelling to avoid your card being blocked overseas and check if your card charges foreign ATM fees.
Should I tip in Bali? If so, how much?
Tipping isn’t mandatory in Bali, but it’s always appreciated. A small gesture goes a long way!
Here’s a quick guide:
- Restaurants: 5 – 10% if service charge isn’t already included
- Hotel staff: Rp10,000 – Rp20,000 for bellhops or housekeeping
- Drivers and guides: Rp50,000+ depending on service
- Spas and salons: 5 – 10% of the service total
