Randall Deer is something of an enigma: he runs a leading luxury travel company, yet his favourite holiday is camping. It’s easy to see that he loves being outdoors, whether it’s hiking in the Gold Coast Hinterland, mountain biking or spending the weekend at the beach with his family.
He is charismatic and easy to relate to, with a contagious flame within him to keep moving forward, making headway and living up to the motto of My Holiday Centre, the parent brand offering these unbeatable holidays, is all about innovation.
Randall is clear that his goal is to be an industry maker and to make a difference to the customers planning their holidays. He is passionate about avoiding the common practice of luring the public to call in by promoting an unreasonably low price, then selling everything from flights to transfers to day trips at additional costs. He believes in transparency with the packages offered, priding himself in the fact that the price advertised will be attainable 95% of the time. Holidays are delivered in a finished format which leaves nothing to chance, and because of the established relationships with airline, resort, and tour operator partners, travellers can be guaranteed the best value holidays.
Relax. Most people go on vacation specifically to relax, but I think it’s a waste of time. There’s so much to see and do! It’s gotten so I have to schedule in time to relax, with nothing else on. Bridgie [Bridget Deer, Randall’s wife] keeps trying to help me relax. She’ll tell me “Ok, after breakfast we’re going to sit by the pool”, and I ask her “And do what?” She tells me “Nothing, we’re just going to sit by the pool and enjoy the sun and relax.”
I can’t do that – I ask if I can get my iPad or laptop and do work, but I’m not allowed. So I’m trying to get better at spending a little bit of time relaxing, but it’s actually very difficult for me! So yeah, relaxing is one thing I haven’t done on holidays.
No board games. If I’m not working then we stay really busy – have family and friends over for barbecues, go to the beach, go camping, bike riding or fishing. I’ll spend the weekends doing work around the house or getting down to Byron or hiking in the hinterland.
Once a week I let Bridgie sleep in and will spend a few hours alone with the boys. In that time we’ll go empty the crab pots or watch a movie together or play Playstation. My boys are very active, so we’ll be out kicking the footy around or wrestling in the backyard. My time with the kids is always active, so definitely not sitting around playing board games. Probably the quietest activities we do are watching movies or reading. The boys read, that is, and I help them – they don’t see me reading many books.
The most important thing to take away from Randall is this: “We aren’t trying to be all things to all people, but we are great at working with the customers we have. We don’t leave anything to chance and we are concerned with the customer journey. Booking a holiday should be a fun, easy experience and we want to share that journey with our clients.”
